Recent developments in trade and international integration have promoted communication and cultural exchange between countries. Idioms are an element used in this communication process. Therefore, translating idioms is important in communication, especially in cross-cultural and international exchanges. However, during translation, translators often encounter barriers due to non-equivalence between idioms in different languages. Non-equivalence arises from differences in culture, history, customs, beliefs, and other factors across countries. Based on theoretical foundations of idioms and practical survey data, the paper discusses non-equivalence in translating English - Vietnamese idioms while proposing solutions to overcome these challenges, contributing to improving the effectiveness of translating English idioms into Vietnames in particular and translation in general.
